Portfolio summary

The work I have submitted is a selection of my most successful pieces that have a significant effect on my current working style that I have today.  What makes me tick as a Graphic designer is the freedom of my personal expressions without being pigeon holed or restricted. I applied for this course to help myself mature as a graphic designer and to prepare myself for a successful career in the future. A majority of my graphic pieces translate my thoughts and my opinions of the world around me. For example my Hand Gun piece is my personal response to the gun crime and violence among my generation and a response to how it is portrayed. The smoke coming from the barrel takes the shape resembling of human bones connotes death. This image follows a saying that my dad told me that any weapon can only be as dangerous as the mind-set of those that hold them, which sums up this piece perfectly.
As a graphic designer I consider myself as a bit of a perfectionist in the way that I work. I like to make sure that I can get the best out of my pieces and present them in the greatest way possible. I believe that you get out what you put in when it comes to creating my pieces. The more effort and determination that is put into the pieces of work the better they become. My best examples of my devotion to my work are shown in my diorama piece for GTA: Bradford City Stories. This piece was built for as cheaply as possible by using common materials that I had lying around and experimentation to create a sense of realism from these materials in the finished piece. I managed to blur the line between realism and fantasy by using different techniques to present the diorama.

Logos & Identities

This is a logo that I was asked to create for Abundant Life Church in Bradford for their youth group Edge. I kept a strict three colour scheme to make sure that it doesn’t look too busy. To date, this logo is still currently being used by them in their Friday night events

This was a graphic I made for a music event. I followed a brief that required bold and vibrant colours to match the theme of the event. The character was derived from a sketched character that I have used on some other works.

This was a logo produced for a local unsigned band called Every Dying Moment. This was a development of their old logo which was very to dimensional and scruffy. To get an idea of what style the logo should have, I attended a few of their gigs in order to create a logo that suited their style and image.

This piece was my final piece for my AS unit 2 final piece. This is the final story instalment, in the form of a diorama instead of an illustration. This finally reveals the dark side of the city that was waiting to appear. I think this piece helped convey my thoughts about the city I live in, the destruction shown in this piece shows how that lack of respect for your surroundings and a cumbersome council can ruin what could be a great place to be.
Based upon the classic Disney character with a dark twist. The first image is a juxtaposition of the original character and Blade from The Puppet Master, with the costume more than anything else. The line art was used to create a series of mono prints as well. The bottom image was my final piece, this was a progression from the original picture. The Pinocchio in this image is far more emotive and hostile than the original versions.

Hand Gun

This is one of my photo manipulation pieces. It takes a literal approach to what the title suggests. A gun that has taken the form of a human hand. I created a cold and moody atmosphere by using blues and greens for filters as well as draining out the other colours as well. Throughout this piece I came to the conclusion that weapons can only be dangerous in the hands that are holding them.

GTA: Bradford City Stories Vol. 2

The Mini Conertible being casually driven by Waxy and Strawbs
The follow on from the first illustration, like the first it was influenced by the Grand Theft Auto video game with the bold outlines and finish. But this time it involves an action. There was an image used for reference when creating the outlines but the rest was either recycled from the first image or made from scratch again. the drivers are actually two of my friends that was added later on in the process.
The open top car, the golden sunset and the big city shows a playful and pleasant surroundings. the gun being held by Strawbs is a subtle reference to the underground activity involved.

GTA: Bradford City Stories vol. 1

The original car sketch

This version is created in the style of the Sin City graphic novels, the Film Noir atmosphere with the red left visible gives a fitting, classy and seductive apperance.

This was my exam piece for my AS Art, this was an illustration that was heavily influenced by the Vinewood Chick artwork featured on Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The seductive posture of the character, the muscular looking car and the glamourous surroundings relates to the atmosphere and feel of the Vinewood Chick image.
